Blue Jean Lotus Leather Goods

Crafting Connection, Community, and Australian-Made Quality

Interview by Tiffanny Chapman

From humble beginnings at the kitchen table to market stalls across Queensland, Blue Jean Lotus Leather Goods is stitching together more than just beautiful bags and belts; it’s a story of resilience, passion, and the enduring value of Australian craftsmanship.

Founded by Sally Witt and Mathew Lawrence in early 2025, Blue Jean Lotus Leather Goods was born out of both necessity and creativity. Sally, who began leatherwork in 2009 through her Army service, turned to the craft as a therapeutic outlet for her mental health and injuries. When Mat suffered a severe back injury that ended his construction career, leatherwork became not just a new skill but a shared family livelihood. With a family of 3 children, including a newborn, Mat immersed himself in intensive training, quickly moving from beginner to maker.

Today, Blue Jean Lotus Leather Goods offers an impressive range of handmade leather goods. From handbags and toiletry bags to belts, wallets, guitar straps, and even dog collars. While their toiletry bags and belts remain market bestsellers, Sally notes the joy in seeing niche items, like guitar straps, appreciated for their craftsmanship. Operating primarily through artisan markets and a growing online presence, the pair are now investing in an online presence to showcase their products and reach a wider audience.

Their focus on Australian-made quality sets them apart, as they advocate for goods truly produced locally, supporting families like theirs rather than mass-produced “Australian-designed” imports. But Blue Jean Lotus Leather Goods is about more than products. Sally and Mat are committed to community and connection, working within a local homeschool co-op and planning leatherwork classes for kids and adults alike.

It’s a nod to Sally’s earlier involvement with Bootstraps, a charity supporting veterans and first responders through leatherwork. “This craft gave me focus when I needed it most,” Sally shares, keen to continue fostering its benefits for others.

Their plans don’t stop there. With upcoming appearances at Cowgirl’s Gathering, the Dalby Stockhorse Sale, and Roma’s Easter in the Country, Blue Jean Lotus Leather Goods is carving out a steady path in Queensland’s event circuit while nurturing dreams of broader growth.

With a passion rooted in personal experience and a commitment to quality, Blue Jean Lotus Leather Goods is more than just a brand, it’’s a story of healing and hands-on artistry.
