Magic Breed: There When Every Minute Matters

For more than 40 years, Magic Breed has helped Australian breeders face foaling season with greater confidence. Today, Magic Breed Plus continues that legacy, combining proven reliability with modern technology and uses that extend well beyond the foaling box.
The company behind Magic Breed designed and manufactured the original system, with many units still working after 30 or even 40 years in the field.

When components used in the original model became obsolete and could no longer be serviced, the team knew the system needed to evolve.

“We wanted to give our clients the reliability they had become accustomed to with the original Magic Breed, while introducing modern technology and additional functions,” the team explains.

The result was Magic Breed Plus: a non-invasive monitoring system designed to assist during foaling and help owners monitor horses with possible colic or following surgery.

BUILT ON RELIABILITY AND PERSONAL SERVICE

Magic Breed attributes its long-standing customer loyalty to two things: a simple system that works and dependable customer service.
When breeders call for assistance, they speak directly with the people who make the product—not an unrelated third party.

“We can assist customers immediately because they are speaking to the people who physically manufacture the system,” the team says. “We do everything we can to help them achieve a positive outcome.”

That direct support is especially valuable during foaling season, when questions can feel urgent and breeders need clear, practical advice.

PEACE OF MIND THROUGH FOALING SEASON

As a mare’s due date approaches, breeders may spend weeks checking her throughout the night. Sleep becomes fragmented, stress rises and every unfamiliar sound can send someone hurrying back to the stable.

A foaling alarm cannot replace careful preparation or experienced observation. It can, however, provide a valuable layer of backup.
“Many breeders are highly stressed and extremely sleep-deprived during those weeks,” the team explains. “Having an alarm gives them peace of mind—like having an assistant there to help.”

Magic Breed Plus uses a small, lightweight transmitter that attaches non-invasively to the horse’s halter. When the horse lies down, the system alerts the owner so they can assess whether attention may be required.

For breeders, that alert can mean the opportunity to rest between checks with greater confidence, knowing another safeguard is in place.

WHEN A PRECAUTION BECAME A LIFELINE

Over the years, the Magic Breed team has heard many stories from customers who were able to be present when their horses needed them most.

One story remains particularly memorable.

A mare had undergone surgery and was examined by a veterinarian at approximately 5pm. She was considered stable and given the all-clear. Her owner nevertheless decided to fit the Magic Breed Plus system as an extra precaution.

During the night, the mare collapsed.
The system raised the alarm, allowing the owner to respond immediately and arrange urgent help.
“Had the owner not been alerted, the mare would have died,” the team recalls. “Instead, they were able to get immediate assistance and save her life.”

MORE THAN A FOALING ALARM

While Magic Breed Plus is best known as a foaling alarm, it can also be used when monitoring a horse with possible colic or during post-surgical recovery.

“It isn’t something most owners immediately think of,” the team says. “We are trying to educate people to use the system throughout the year because it can be lifesaving.”

An alert that a horse has lain down allows the owner to check the animal promptly, assess the situation and contact a veterinarian if required.

The system does not diagnose illness or replace veterinary care. Its role is to alert the person responsible for the horse so they can respond without unnecessary delay.

PREPARATION STARTS EARLY

As a mare’s due date approaches, breeders may spend weeks checking her throughout the night. Sleep becomes fragmented, stress rises and every unfamiliar sound can send someone hurrying back to the stable.

A foaling alarm cannot replace careful preparation or experienced observation. It can, however, provide a valuable layer of backup.
“Many breeders are highly stressed and extremely sleep-deprived during those weeks,” the team explains. “Having an alarm gives them peace of mind, like having an assistant there to help.”

Magic Breed Plus uses a small, lightweight transmitter that attaches non-invasively to the horse’s halter. When the horse lies down, the system alerts the owner so they can assess whether attention may be required.

For breeders monitoring multiple mares, a single base station can monitor up to eight mares or horses, making it a practical option for larger breeding operations as well as individual horse owners.

For breeders, that extra layer of monitoring can mean the opportunity to rest between checks with greater confidence, knowing another safeguard is in place.

PROUDLY AUSTRALIAN MADE

For Magic Breed, Australian manufacturing means maintaining control over quality while offering a complete service—from production and supply through to advice and aftercare.

The system continues to be designed and manufactured on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

“As an Australian manufacturing company, we pride ourselves on quality control and being able to support our customers throughout the life of the product,” the team says.

That direct relationship has helped Magic Breed evolve while retaining the qualities that earned breeders’ trust in the first place: simplicity, reliability and personal support.

After more than four decades, Magic Breed continues to stand watch alongside Australian breeders—helping them rest a little easier while remaining ready to respond when their horses need them most.
